Almost always this means the photos have no locations in them. Thatplace works from the location recorded in a picture when it was taken, so a library shot with location turned off — or one exported and re-imported in a way that stripped it — has nothing for the app to read. There is no way around this: the location has to be in the photo.

On iPhone, check Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera. That governs photos taken from now on, not ones you already have.

The other reason is that Thatplace looks for stretches of days spent away from home, so photos taken near where you live are deliberately not offered as a trip. If home is wrong, or unset, see the next answer.

Add it to your list of home locations. Settings → Home on iPhone and iPad, or the Home tab of Settings on a Mac. It is a list rather than a single place, so a second home, a partner's flat, the town your parents live in and a city you work in every month can all be on it, and none of them will be offered as a trip again.

Searching there is limited to towns, cities and regions on purpose: an entry marks a region you are based in, not a building.

Tap the place on the trip and pick the right answer. Thatplace offers what it thought were the runners-up, and a search if none of them is right — and typing a name is one of the results, so somewhere with no business listing at all (a cabin, a friend's house, a beach) can just be named.

Corrections are yours and survive a re-scan. Nothing re-groups a trip you have already saved.

Because it isn't certain, and saying so is deliberate. Thatplace works out which business you were in from where and when a photo was taken and what is in the picture, and sometimes several answers fit. A name it is confident about is stated plainly; one it isn't is hedged; somewhere it cannot work out asks you rather than picking. A wrong answer presented as certain costs more than an honest hedge.

On a trip, use Select to pick the places that belong together and Merge them — the earliest one keeps the name. To pull photos out of a place, select them and move them out to a place of their own. On a Mac you can also drag a photo from one place to another.

Anything that doesn't belong can be hidden, which is reversible and shows on the trip's Hidden screen along with anything Thatplace hid by itself. Deleting for good lives there too, and nowhere else.

Check that iCloud syncing is on in Settings on both devices, that both are signed in to the same Apple Account, and that both have a network connection. Syncing is on by default.

Changes usually appear within seconds. If one doesn't, leaving the screen and coming back re-reads it. If a device still disagrees after that, please write to us and say which change was made where.

Tap Restore Purchases in Settings, on the device that is asking. Purchases are tied to your Apple Account rather than to a device, so restoring is all that is needed — and it is free.

Refunds are handled by Apple rather than by us. Apple's page for that is reportaproblem.apple.com.

No. It reads dates and locations from your photos, but does not modify your photo library.

Removing a photo from a trip in Thatplace removes it from the trip. It does not delete the photo.

Settings → Advanced shows how many shared links you have and offers Remove All Shared Links. Links also expire on their own after a while.

Ending a link stops anyone new from opening it. It cannot take back places somebody has already added to their own copy of the app.

The link opens a page explaining what it is. To see the places you need the app, because the list is held in the sender's own iCloud and only Thatplace can read it.

On iPhone and iPad, deleting the app removes its storage with it.

On a Mac, dragging an app to the Trash deliberately leaves its data behind — so if you want it gone, also remove ~/Library/Containers/tech.fivetonine.thatplace. If you had iCloud syncing on, the copy in your iCloud is removed by turning off Thatplace under Settings → your name → iCloud.

None of this touches your photos.

A first scan reads every photo in the library and looks at the pictures themselves, which is real work — on a large library it takes a while and uses the processor hard. It only happens when you ask it to, and it can be cancelled.

It is much happier plugged in. If it is taking far longer than you would expect, tell us roughly how many photos are in your library.
